5 Fast-Paced Multiplayer FPS Games Like Overwatch

With all the controversy and hype surrounding Overwatch, if you haven’t played or heard of it, you must be living under a rock. Blizzard’s new competitive multiplayer first-person shooter (FPS) rose straight to the top on all gaming sites, YouTube and Twitch after its release. Most other games on Steam suffered a slight loss of players too for a few days after.

The unique fast-paced gameplay of Overwatch has already attracted over 7 million players across all platforms (available on PC, PS4 and Xbox One) and these players have logged over 120 million hours already!

Blizzard has taken a few ideas from games like Team Fortress 2 and Smite and turned it all into an adrenaline-pumping beast. So without wandering any further here are 5 fast-paced multiplayer FPS games like Overwatch to get your palms sweaty and your blood pumping.

(ranked in no particular order)

1. Battleborn

In direct competition with Overwatch, Battleborn is Gearbox Software’s attempt at capturing the market for multiplayer FPS games. The game received a “mixed to average” response with many favorable reviews. It is described as a competitive FPS incorporating many multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) elements. At the start of a round players select from one of the pre-defined heroes, each with unique spells, skills and abilities including area-of-effect attacks and other forms of magic.

The game features 25 characters at launch, categorized based on their agility, combat range, combat effectiveness and the difficulty of playing the hero. Although not Overwatch, Battleborn is the closest new game we can think of.

2. Team Fortress 2 (TF2)

Team Fortress or TF2, in our opinion, is probably the most likely multiplayer game Blizzard got its inspiration from for Overwatch. Team Fortress has been around since 1996 after starting as a team and class-based mod for Quake. And since then it has gone through a ton of changes, finally becoming free-to-play in June 2011.

If you liked playing Overwatch or are just looking for a free alternative, Team Fortress 2 can provide you with uncountable hours of fun.

3. DOOM (2016)

Another old franchise on the list, the development of the original Doom began in 1992 after a new game engine called the Doom engine was developed by John Carmack, who also cofounded id Software. The game too has gone through many iterations before (most importantly Doom, Doom II and Doom 3) but the reception of the 2016 version has still been amazing. Almost 23 years, yet the franchise refuses to show its age.

Although multiplayer isn’t the selling point of Doom, the game still holds its own when it comes to fast-paced gameplay. Aside from common game modes like Team Deathmatch, Domination (Capturing three points) and Soul Harvest (very similar to Team Deathmatch), it features an exciting game mode called ‘Freeze Tag‘ which should bring back many fond memories for anyone who has played Quake.

If this wasn’t enough the single-player campaign of the game has received great praise from most players and a positive reception from almost all game review sites. DOOM is a brutally fun and challenging FPS experience priced at $59.99.

4. Tribes: Ascend

Tribes: Ascend is a free-to-play multiplayer class-based FPS from Hi-Rez Studios with unique aspects like skiing and jet packs. Each class has a different type of armor, along with diverse weapons and items. Features like jetpacks and skiing makes the game pretty unique, fast-moving and lots of fun.

5. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive

As we get to the last item on the list it is not exactly like Overwatch but fits the criteria of excellent fast-paced multiplayer FPS perfectly. Most you may have already played it but we thought Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) would be a perfect fit for this piece. Building on the team-based gameplay it pioneered over 15 years ago, CS: GO for many gamers is a masterpiece. With the Steam Summer Sale rumored to be right around the corner, we recommend it as a must-have for any action FPS lover. Just wait a few weeks and pick it up for 50% or more off.
